7.5. Connecting ChatGPT to the HelpSpot MCP Server

This guide walks you through connecting ChatGPT to the HelpSpot MCP server.

Before You Begin

• You have access to the HelpSpot admin area.
• MCP is enabled in your HelpSpot instance.
• You have a ChatGPT plan that supports custom MCP connectors through Developer Mode: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu. Custom connectors are not available on the Free plan.
• On Business and Enterprise workspaces, an administrator must enable Developer Mode before you can add a connector.
• ChatGPT supports only remote MCP servers, which the HelpSpot MCP server is.

Step 1: Get Your HelpSpot MCP Server URL

1. Log in to your HelpSpot admin area.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Select MCP.
4. Enable the MCP server if it is not already enabled.
5. Copy the MCP Server URL.

Step 2: Enable Developer Mode in ChatGPT

1. In ChatGPT, go to Settings.
2. Select Apps, then Advanced settings. OpenAI renamed "Connectors" to "Apps" in December 2025; older accounts may still see "Connectors."
3. Toggle Developer Mode on and confirm the warning prompt.

Step 3: Add HelpSpot as a Custom Connector

1. In Settings > Apps, choose Create (Add custom connector).
2. Enter a name, such as HelpSpot, and an optional description.
3. Paste your HelpSpot MCP Server URL.
4. Set the authentication mode to OAuth.
5. Confirm that you trust the application and finish adding the connector.

Step 4: Authenticate the Connection

1. Complete the OAuth sign-in prompt in the popup window.
2. Approve the requested access.
3. If the popup does not appear, make sure your browser allows popups and try again.

Troubleshooting

Developer Mode or Advanced settings does not appear

Confirm your plan supports custom connectors. On Business and Enterprise workspaces, an administrator must enable Developer Mode.

Authentication fails

• Confirm the MCP Server URL is correct.
• Allow popups in your browser and retry the OAuth prompt.

ChatGPT does not use the HelpSpot tools

Make sure the HelpSpot connector is toggled on in the Developer Mode tool menu, and tell ChatGPT explicitly to use the HelpSpot tools.
